Mark Engberg | Founding Principal

Founding Principal, Mark Engberg, AIA, LEED AP, has 31 years of experience in the design profession, 21 of which have been completed as principal at COLAB Architecture + Urban Design. Engberg has a diverse portfolio of design work in the fields of urban design, architecture and brand inspired design. He was the recipient of the 1987 Boston Society of Architects sponsored Rotch Traveling Scholarship which afforded him the opportunity to study urban architecture and high density residential architecture in 14 countries from Great Britain to New Zealand. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Idaho in 1984 and his Master’s degree in Architecture and Urban Design in 1989 from Columbia University in New York City. He has spent much of his career working on large-scale architecture projects including projects in New York City, Hong Kong, Cairo, Chicago, San Diego, Los Angeles, Portland, Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

In 1994 Engberg established COLAB Architecture + Urban Design in Portland on the notion of establishing a firm with wide diversity in project type. The founding principle was: “Design Everything.” As principal and lead designer of the firm, he has produced architectural designs for clients such as Nike, ABC Television, Ferrari, E-Trade, Disney and Gatorade.

Engberg’s design work has been recognized in publications and through awards, including awards from the Portland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Boston Society of Architects. His residential work has recently been published in a book about Northwest regional design. His own residence is featured in a new book about American Mid-Century Modern ranch houses.

David Gabriel | Principal

Principal, David Gabriel AIA, LEED AP, has over 15 years of experience defined by a series of successful designs which span a broad spectrum of project types and scales. Mr. Gabriel received his master’s degree from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, where his thesis focused on a critical approach to public space within multi-modal centers. Gabriel went on to work for small design firms on projects ranging from private residences and summer camps to student unions and campus master plans. The success of these projects earned several local and national design awards, and shared one common element: an intense and sensitive focus on the integration of site, climate and context.

Mr. Gabriel moved to Portland after finishing his travels that were the result of being awarded the Rotch Traveling Scholarship, a prestigious award given by the Boston Society of Architects. Since joining COLAB, Gabriel has worked as a project designer and manager for several large scale urban projects and high-rise structures in the U.A.E and Egypt. The urban projects have included ferry passenger terminals, marina support towers, yacht clubs and multi-use urban environments. He has also designed and managed retail hospitality projects for both local and national brands, such as the Ferrari store and showroom in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is currently assisting Oregon College of Art and Craft realize the first studio buildings of their 10 year master plan. Mr. Gabriel has also taught in the architecture departments of Portland State University and the graduate program at the University of Oregon.

Rajiv Batra

Rajiv heads up the Urban Design & Planning team at COLAB. He received his Master’s degree in Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology, in 1976, and his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the Indian Institute of Technology, in 1971.

Widely accredited for transformative projects across private, public and institutional sectors, Rajiv brings the knowledge and know-how from four decades of experience in mixed-use buildings, land use plans, mass transit systems, Transit Oriented Development TOD, large-scale commercial real estate development, and urban renewal / revitalization. His expertise includes multi-discipline design management, from interpreting the client’s vision, to conceptualization and submission of deliverables.

Regardless of the nature of the assignment, Rajiv is passionate about accomplishing the project objectives with creativity and technical excellence. Place making is an intrinsic part of his approach. On a $1 billion light rail transit construction project in metropolitan Portland OR, Rajiv’s input yielded timely resolution and consensus on a host of controversial preliminary design engineering features.  This trailblazing technique known as Development Oriented Transit DOT, is incorporated into the plans and practices of many mass transit projects today.

He believes that in order for human settlements to thrive and benefit from urbanization, there must be thoughtful diagnosing, envisioning, planning and designing.
