The Studio

COLAB Architecture + Urban Design was established in 1994 as a collaborative studio bringing together the talents of architects, interior, graphic, and industrial designers. The studio was formed around one notion: A multi-disciplinary approach to challenging projects inspires innovation and lasting design solutions.  That continues to be our experience.

Mark Engberg founded COLAB and has been leading the studio since its inception. Mark grew up in the inter-mountain west but has worked on the east and west coasts. Engberg has 35 years of experience in architecture, urban design, and planning. His career has led him to projects in Japan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, The UAE, Qatar, and thirty-one US states.

Principal David Gabriel joined COLAB in 2002 and has been enhancing the COLAB brand with his design and technical expertise. David grew up on the east coast but now is firmly an Oregonian. Engberg and Gabriel have collaborated on numerous projects ranging from entertainment and branding to large-scale urban designs to private houses. The COLAB studio has evolved into a boutique practice but has been as large as 35 employees with offices in two countries and two states. Engberg’s wife Laurie joined the firm in 2018 as office manager and splits her time between Portland and her real love of place, Arch Cape.
